Had to choose between a cease and desist letter or a DMCA takedown for a stolen photo

Back in March, a local bakery in Portland used one of my food photos on their Instagram without asking. I contacted them twice, got no reply, so I had to pick between sending a formal cease and desist or filing a DMCA with Instagram. I went with the DMCA because it felt faster and more direct, and within 48 hours the photo was removed. But now I wonder if I should have sent the letter too, just to protect my rights if they use the image again. Has anyone else dealt with choosing between these two routes, and did you regret not doing both?
