Lost $180 on a US Copyright Office filing for a logo I designed, and the client walked
I paid the $45 filing fee plus $135 to a prep service to register a logo I made for a bakery in Tucson back in March. The owner kept saying she would sign the paperwork "next week" and never did, so the registration sat in limbo while I waited on her. By the time I found out she had already hired someone else and was using a ripped version of my design, the filing window was dead and I was out the full $180 with nothing to show. Lesson learned: I will never front filing costs for a logo without a signed contract and a deposit in hand first. Has anyone here ever gotten a client to cover the registration fee upfront, or do you just bake it into your base price?
