Showerthought: my paper copyright log beats my fancy tracking app for spotting stolen work
I used to dump every logo and blog post I made into a $15 a month tracking app, and a guy in Austin still lifted 3 of my designs for his own site without paying. Last month I switched to a plain notebook where I write the date, the name of the file, and who got it, and I caught his copy in 2 minutes. The app buried everything in tabs and sync errors, but flipping pages showed me right away that my invoice image never got a license attached. Now I photograph each page and keep one folder on my desktop. Has anyone else found a dumb paper habit that actually stuck better than software for this stuff?

I keep a cheap spiral notebook for client logos too, and last year I found a shop in Ohio using one of my blog headers just by flipping back through it. The page had the date I sent the file and the note "no license signed yet," which took me 30 seconds to spot, while my old app had it buried under three folders and a login I kept forgetting. The thing that made it stick was taping the invoice right next to the entry, so the missing paper trail was impossible to miss. Paper doesn't send me sync error emails at 2am either.
