Spent 3 months watermarking my proofs wrong and lost a $2,800 logo job because of it
Last Tuesday a client in Phoenix sent me a screenshot of my own logo drafts that she'd pulled off my preview page, and she'd already paid some guy $200 to clean them up and remove my watermark. I always thought a faint diagonal watermark across the middle was enough, but she just cropped the image tighter and the mark fell off the edge of the canvas. It hit me that I'd been posting low-res proofs with the watermark sitting in dead space instead of overlapping the actual design, so anyone could trim it out in ten seconds. Now I flatten the file and stamp the mark right across the main artwork, plus I only send 72 dpi versions with a signed contract before any final file goes out. Has anyone here gotten a client to pay up after they already handed the cleaned-up art to someone else, or is small claims the only move left?
Sounds like she did you a favor by showing you the holes in your setup before a bigger job walked out the door. Small claims is probably your only shot now, but good luck getting blood from a $200 logo guy.
