Appreciation post: That weird scalp scrub thing actually works

For a year, I thought those viral scalp scrub brushes were just a gimmick. A client in my chair last Thursday had the healthiest scalp I've seen in months, and she said it was because she started using one for two minutes before every wash. I tried it on myself for a week, and my own hair feels thicker and cleaner at the roots. What other simple tools have you all tried that seemed silly but gave real results?

It's not really a scrub, it's just a silicone brush. The scrub versions with grit can actually damage your scalp over time.

My mom's old wooden hairbrush did the same thing for her.

Yeah, I used to think that too until janag43 made me see it differently.

You're right about the scrub versions with grit. That stuff is way too harsh for most people. The real benefit is just the gentle silicone bristles moving the product around and loosening dead skin. It's the same reason a soft washcloth works better on your face than a rough scrub. People see "scrub" and think they need to sand their scalp raw to get it clean, but that just causes more problems. The simple silicone tool is good, the gritty paste is where it goes wrong.
