Tried a 20 volume developer on my roots last week instead of 30

I usually use 30 volume to lift my dark roots, but I figured I'd test 20 volume to see if it would give a softer grow-out. It barely lifted at all, now I've got this weird orange band that I have to fix with a toner. Anyone else ever swap volumes and regret it instantly?

Why risk it when 30 volume already works fine for you?

You said "30 volume already works fine" and honestly that was me for like 2 years. I stuck with 30 volume because I was scared to mess up my hair or get uneven lift. But then I tried 20 volume with a longer processing time and it actually gave me way more control. The color came out smoother and my hair felt less damaged after. I think people overestimate how much you really need 30 volume unless you're going for a big lift. 20 volume just takes a little longer but the results look way more natural in my experience.

Yeah, Shane, I get what you're saying but it reminds me of how people stick with the same coffee order forever just because it works. @sethm58 made a solid point about the control thing, your mileage may vary but I've noticed in life if something works good enough people stop experimenting, and sometimes you miss out on a better option.
