My main hoist cable started birdcaging during a pick in Dallas last Tuesday.

I had to signal for an emergency stop, lower the load slowly with the auxiliary, and call maintenance to replace the whole 400-foot section before we could finish the lift.

Anchor points are the first thing I'd check.

Holy cow, a 400-foot cable just gave out?

Man, everyone's talking about the cable itself. But what about the anchor points? A cable that long needs serious end fittings. If those weren't inspected or were corroded, it wouldn't matter how strong the steel was. The failure point is almost always at the connection. Someone probably skipped a basic check on the hardware.
