Talking to a guy who ran a crane with no cab in the 80s

Met an old timer at a job site in Cleveland last week. He said he used to run a crane from a seat on the boom, no cab at all, just a coat and a hard hat. Said you felt every shift of the wind and the cold went right through you. It hit different because my rig has heat, a radio, and a computer that tells me the load. Makes you think about how much the gear has changed, not just the skill. Anyone else run into stories like that from the old days?

Losing some feel for the work" is something I get now.

Ever notice how we're getting more comfortable but maybe losing some feel for the work? My grandpa talked about driving trucks with no power steering, you just had to be stronger and pay more attention. Does all the tech in gear today make the job easier but also more distant?
