Thought that hydraulic fluid flush was a scam, then my swing motor started grinding on a Tuesday job in Amarillo
I kept telling the younger guys that a $400 fluid flush was just the shop trying to pad the bill, because I ran the same 1998 Link-Belt for 11 years without one. Last Tuesday in Amarillo my swing motor started grinding and the tech pulled out fluid that looked like coffee with cream, and he said this is what 6 years of skipping the flush looks like. So was I just lucky for a decade, or does anybody else think those flush intervals in the manual are way shorter than they need to be?

The line about "6 years of skipping the flush" is the part that gets me. That same story plays out with oil changes, air filters, water heaters, you name it. The manual says every X miles or every year, and then somebody runs it way past that and nothing blows up, so they decide the whole thing is a scam. But nothing blowing up yet is not the same as nothing wearing out. Things like this wear slow and quiet, and by the time you can see or hear the damage, you are already paying for it. The lucky decade did not mean the fluid was fine, it just meant the bill came due on a Tuesday in Amarillo instead of somewhere you would have rather been.
