TIL the old timer who told me to slow my swing on blind picks was right, and it cost me a fence to learn it
Back in March I was setting trusses at a job site in Amarillo and Ray, a 30 year operator, told me to cut my swing speed way down when I can't see the load from the cab. I brushed it off for a month until I clipped a customer's chain link fence on a blind pick and tore out about 40 feet of it. Ray never said a word about it, just helped me roll the wire back up. How do you all stay smooth on picks you can't see without crawling in and out of the seat every five minutes?
Yeah blind picks will humble you quick lol. What worked for me was picking a spot on the horizon past the load, like a light pole or a tree, and keeping the boom pointed at it while I swing. That one trick alone cut out most of my jerking around. I also learned to move the stick slower than feels right, like half the speed you'd use if you could see it. The guys on the ground waving me in would get antsy but I'd rather take an extra 30 seconds than buy another fence. Ray sounds like a solid dude for not rubbing it in.
