Vent: cranked my load chart to 75 percent for two years before a guy in Tulsa set me straight
I ran every pick at what I figured was a safe margin, and last June a rigger named Dale watched me boom up and asked why I was reading the chart off the wrong radius line. Turns out I had been measuring from the wrong point on the deck the whole time, so my "safe" numbers were off by about 4 feet on every lift. How do you guys double check your radius without slowing the whole crew down?
Man, that four feet creeps up on you fast when you're swinging out past the pads! What works for me is marking the deck once with soapstone or tape at the exact swing point I measure from, then checking it against the chart line on the first pick of the day. After that I just eyeball the boom angle on the inclinometer, because if the angle matches the chart my radius is right and I don't have to climb down or hold up the crew. Dale did you a solid, that's the kind of catch that saves a boom.
