Walked into my bank in Tampa and the advisor tried to push a card with a $150 annual fee for 'building credit'.

Honestly, I think that's a scam for newbies, but my friend says the travel perks make it worth it. Has anyone actually built good credit with a pricey card like that?

...and honestly, I went for it with a card that had a $95 fee a few years back because the rewards looked good. I was new to credit too and scared of messing up. But what really helped was setting up autopay for the full balance every month, no exceptions. That way I never missed a payment and my score went up fast. The fee stung at first but the travel points actually paid for themselves after a couple trips. Just make sure you actually use the perks, otherwise you're flushing money down the drain for nothing.

Do you really need to pay that much just for a credit score?

Focus on the fee, not the credit building. Any card builds credit if you pay it off each month.

My gym charges $10 monthly just to hold a membership.
