Appreciation post: Found a forgotten guest WiFi network with no password at a coffee shop in Tucson
I was at this little coffee shop near the university in Tucson last week, just doing some work. While I was checking my own hotspot setup, I saw their guest network pop up on my phone. It had no password at all, wide open for anyone. That's a big risk for people using it, especially if they're logging into bank accounts or email. I ended up telling the barista about it and they actually changed it to a password by the time I left. Has anyone else run into open networks like this and actually said something?

Yeah I've done that before, mentioned it nicely to the staff and most places are actually grateful since they just didn't think about it lol. Helped one spot set up a simple password right there on their router.

Wait, you actually set up a password right there on their router? That's wild.

Three restaurants in my neighborhood had zero password protection until I helped them out. One pizza place's network was wide open for months and some dude was just sitting in the parking lot downloading movies on their connection. I felt bad for the owner when I pointed it out so I walked him through setting up a simple password on his phone. He was genuinely relieved because he had no idea how to do it himself.
