Dropped $200 on a 'premium' VPN service that did nothing special

Last year I signed up for NordVPN's 2 year plan because everyone online hyped it up. Cost me about $200 upfront. After 6 months I realized my free DNS filtering was blocking the same trackers and my ISP still saw my traffic on certain sites. The kill switch actually failed twice during torrents too. Anyone found a free or cheap setup that actually beats these big name VPNs?

That $200 upfront for a "premium" VPN hurts. The kill switch failing twice during torrents would have me ready to throw my laptop out the window. Try Mullvad. It's like 5 bucks a month, no email required, and they don't keep logs. WireGuard is built right in and it's fast. I switched after my own NordVPN headaches and never looked back.

Man I had a similar thing happen with PIA back in 2017, paid for two years upfront and the kill switch failed during a Linux ISO download. Ended up having to reset my router and reinstall the whole OS because some sketchy ISP notice showed up. Mullvad sounds solid though, that flat rate without the email signup is exactly what I need to avoid another headache.
