That $200 ergonomic chair pad was a waste of money

I bought one of those gel seat cushions for my home office after my back started hurting two weeks into a rush project. Cost me $200 and it just slides around on my chair and makes me sit weird. Now I'm stuck at my desk with a deadline in 3 hours and my back is worse than before. Anyone found a fix that actually works for long sitting sessions?

You said it made you "sit weird" and garcia mentioned the wedge pushing hips forward, and that got me thinking about how a lot of "ergonomic" stuff tries to force your body into one perfect position that just doesn't exist for most people. It's like how every new gadget or app promises to fix a problem but ends up creating two new ones you didn't ask for, like that time I bought a "smart" thermostat that couldn't figure out when I was actually home. Sometimes the simple tailbone cutout cushion and raising your chair an inch is all you need, no expensive gimmicks required.

You mentioned it "makes me sit weird" and I'm curious about that. What kind of weird are we talking about? Like is it forcing your hips too far forward or tilting your pelvis in a way that feels uneven? I've messed around with a few cheaper cushions and found that the ones with a wedge shape actually made things worse because they pushed me into a bad position. Do you think the issue is more about the cushion itself, or maybe the chair underneath it just wasn't built to have something extra on top?

The cushion I ended up with is a flat memory foam one, not wedge shaped at all. That wedge problem you described happened to me too, it pushed my hips forward and made my lower back ache after an hour. I found a cushion that's just a solid block of foam with a cutout for your tailbone, no extra tilt or angle. It sits flat on the chair and my chair is a pretty basic office model with no fancy ergonomics. What really fixed it for me was also raising my chair height a tiny bit so my thighs slope down slightly. That combo stopped the weird pelvis tilt and kept me from slouching. Maybe try a flat cushion with a tailbone cutout and see if your chair height needs adjusting too.
