TIL the real difference between D4 and D2 is how long your hand cramps up
Been trying both stainless types for my own fillings over in Portland. The D4 is softer, easier to pack, but it wears down way fast on my molars. The D2 holds up longer but man, it fights back when you're trying to shape it. I kept reading online that one is just better, but honestly it depends on where in the mouth you're using it. After my third attempt I figured out I needed to use D2 only on the back teeth and D4 for anything near the front. That split approach cut my adjustment time in half, maybe from 40 minutes to 20 per tooth. Has anyone else tried mixing types based on biting pressure or am I overthinking this? The dentist at the clinic near Powell said he never bothers with D4 at all, but I feel like that's lazy.

That bit about mixing types based on biting pressure makes a lot of sense to me. I do the same thing, D2 on the molars where I chew the hardest, and D4 on the premolars where it's more about looks and less about grinding. The one thing I'd add is that the shape matters too. Tight corners between teeth need the softer stuff, flat surfaces can handle the hard D2 without fighting you as much. So maybe it's not just front versus back, but also how much room you're working with.
