Unpopular opinion: the old timer who told me to always crack the injector lines last was right and it cost me a turbo
When I first started turning wrenches on diesels, a guy named Ray who ran the pump shop in Bakersfield told me to always break injector lines loose last when you're chasing a no-start, never first. I figured he was just set in his ways, so on a 5.9 in a 2001 Dodge last month I cracked all six lines first thing trying to bleed it and dumped a bunch of fuel right into the cylinders. Hit the key and it hydrolocked so hard it bent a rod, plus pushed enough raw fuel past the rings that it washed the oil and took the turbo bearings with it. Ray drove over, looked at the mess, and just said yep, that is why we do it last, fuel has to go somewhere and the cylinder is the worst spot. I had done it that way for probably 40 jobs and got lucky every single time, which is the scary part. Now I want to know how many of you were taught the same thing, and did anybody else learn it the hard way like I just did?

Watched a buddy hydro his 7.3 the same way and snap a rod.
