Unpopular opinion: torque wrenches need way more respect than they get
I was working on a Cummins ISX15 last Tuesday over at Johnson Fleet Service in Tulsa. Had a buddy who always just ugga-dugga'd his head bolts and laughed at me for taking time with my torque wrench. Three years ago he blew a head gasket on a rebuild and it cost him $4,500 and three weekends. Now he borrows my Snap-on every time. Has anyone else seen a guy learn this lesson the hard way with their own engine?

You ever think you're saving time by skipping the torque wrench, only to find out later you cost yourself way more time and money? I was that guy for a while, thought it was overkill. Then I had a valve cover leak on a small block Chevy that turned into a cracked head, and that $100 tool started looking like a bargain real fast.

Oh man, I learned that same lesson on a timing cover. Cheap mistakes cost more every time.

Have you noticed how something like a $20 gasket job can balloon into a full-blown engine pull just because we got lazy with the torque specs? @park.aaron nailed it, cheap mistakes really do snowball. I used to strip bolts on brake calipers thinking "tight enough" was fine, until a buddy showed me his warped rotor from uneven clamping force. Your story about the valve cover turning into a cracked head is exactly why I finally broke down and bought a decent beam-style wrench, now I torque everything from oil pans to spark plugs just to sleep better at night.
