A simple trick I found for picking better colors in digital art

I kept seeing a lot of art where the colors felt flat or just off, and I think it's because folks pick colors in a vacuum. For the last six months, I've been making myself pick a main color first, then use the color wheel to find its exact opposite for a small pop of contrast. It sounds basic, but it changed my work. Before, I'd just grab colors that looked nice together, but my pieces felt muddy. Now, I start with a blue I like, find the orange across from it, and use that orange for tiny details like light glints or a button. It makes the whole image feel more alive. What's your go-to method for making colors stand out?

Oh man, that's such a solid tip. I totally get what you mean about colors feeling muddy when you pick them alone. Using opposite colors for small details is a game changer for real.

Honestly I've found the opposite works better for me. I pick a whole set of colors that are close together on the wheel, then just use one really dark or light shade for contrast. Makes things feel more calm and put together.

Yeah that's a good point... I do something like that too. Gray314 is right about the muddy colors thing, but you need that one pop of contrast to keep it from looking flat.
