I thought a global roaming plan was a smart move, but it cost me $400 in a month.

I signed up for a premium international data plan before leaving for Lisbon, thinking it would be simpler than buying local SIM cards. The sales rep said it covered 'most countries' and I wouldn't have to think about it. After three weeks, I got a bill for over $400 because my 'unlimited' data had slow, almost unusable speeds, forcing me to buy expensive daily data passes just to work. The fine print said high-speed data was capped at a tiny amount before throttling. I should have just gotten a local Vodafone SIM for 20 euros. Has anyone found a truly reliable global plan that doesn't have these hidden limits?

I mean, I just buy a local SIM every time now. Those global plans always have some catch.

Ever try an eSIM instead?

Oh man, I was totally on the global plan train for years. Then I got hit with a "fair use" slowdown in Italy that made my maps useless. Swapping a physical SIM at a kiosk is annoying, but at least the data actually works.
