Finally got my basement floor level without using self-leveler after 5 tries

I tried using a long 2x4 and shims to screed the concrete myself and it actually came out flat enough for the laminate, has anyone else had luck skipping the expensive stuff?

Tried that once with a 2x4 and ended up chasing the level around the room like I was wrestling an alligator. Turned out fine in the end though, just took a lot of cussing.

Skipped the self-leveler completely on my last basement job. Used a straight 8 foot 2x4 and checked with a 4 foot level every few feet. Came out within 1/8 inch over 10 feet which was good enough for the click-lock vinyl. Ended up saving about $150 on materials.
