Hot take: skip the fancy tile leveling system, shims work fine
Last weekend I was tiling my bathroom in Portland and my $80 leveling kit broke after 2 rows. Grabbed a pack of plastic shims from the dollar store and honestly the floor came out flatter than the expensive system did. Am I crazy or are those wedge kits just a scam for weekend warriors?

Man that sucks about the kit breaking after only 2 rows, $80 down the drain. I feel you on the frustration because those wedge systems act like they're the only way to get a flat floor, and they are not. I've used plastic shims on plenty of jobs and never had a callback, so you're not crazy at all. The wedge kits have their place on big wall tiles where you need even pressure, but for a bathroom floor they're mostly just hype. Save your money and keep doing what works.
