Hot take: skip the fancy tile leveling system, shims work fine

Last weekend I was tiling my bathroom in Portland and my $80 leveling kit broke after 2 rows. Grabbed a pack of plastic shims from the dollar store and honestly the floor came out flatter than the expensive system did. Am I crazy or are those wedge kits just a scam for weekend warriors?
