My uncle swore by duct tape for plumbing leaks - big mistake lol

When my basement pipe started dripping last summer, my uncle said just wrap duct tape around it and it'll hold. Left it for 3 days then came home to 15 gallons of water on the floor. Has anyone actually had duct tape work for a pipe or was he just messing with me?

Used to think a good wrap of duct tape could handle anything around the house. Then I tried it on a pinhole leak in a copper pipe and learned the hard way it just can't handle water pressure. You really need a proper pipe repair clamp or epoxy for that kind of job, not tape.

Used the same trick on a pinhole leak in my garage last winter - had to mop up about 10 gallons at 2 AM. The thing is, if the pipe is completely dry and the leak is just a tiny pinhole, duct tape can sometimes hold for a day or two while you get a real clamp from the hardware store. But if the pipe is wet or the pressure is anything above a slow drip, it's basically a water balloon waiting to pop. Your uncle probably had good intentions but duct tape just doesn't have the stickiness to fight water pressure on a wet pipe.
