Dropped $60 on a stud finder that beeps at everything, including my own hand
Tried to hang a shelf in my garage and this thing sang at drywall, a pipe, and the empty air next to my knuckle, so has anyone found a cheap one that actually knows where the wood is?

Did you check if it has a deep scan mode? Mine beeped at my hand until I switched it off the default setting, then it settled down and only chirped over actual studs. Also try sliding it flat and slow instead of pushing it against the wall, since the cheap ones freak out if you tilt them. Mine was 25 bucks and it still misses sometimes, so I mark the spots with painter's tape and drill a small test hole before committing.
