But here's something nobody's saying - that double cost might actually be covering stuff you would've paid for separately anyway, like permits and disposal fees that get rolled into one price with the "guy" but show up as hidden extras with a big company. And let's be real, half the time when people say their project doubled, they're including changes they made halfway through that would've cost extra no matter who did the work. It's too easy to blame the contractor when you're the one who decided to swap out all the tile after framing was already done.

I mean, "usually costs double in the end" seems like a pretty big claim... feels like one of those things they just throw around to sound smart. @barbaradavis, I've seen projects go way over budget but also plenty come in right on target, it really just depends on who you get. Like with my buddy's kitchen reno, his "guy" was a referral and actually saved him a few hundred bucks compared to the big box stores. Plus, articles love to pick the worst-case scenario to make a point, you know?
