Bought a $300 dust extractor for my sander and it's a game changer for cleanup

I was tired of the insane mess after sanding a whole ceiling, so I finally got a proper dust extractor. Hooked it up to my orbital sander and the difference was crazy, almost no dust in the air. It saved me at least an hour of cleanup on that one job. Anyone got tips for keeping the filter from clogging up so fast?

Wait, so is the smack trick actually enough to keep the suction strong, or do you still have to wash the filter a lot?

What filter are you using? The cloth ones clog way faster than the paper kind in my experience. I just swap out the bag more often to keep the suction strong.

My buddy had the same problem with his filter clogging every twenty minutes. He started giving the filter a good smack against the side of his dumpster after each use, knocks a ton of the fine dust loose. He also runs the extractor for a minute after he's done, with the sander off, to clear the hose. Seems to buy him a lot more time between cleanouts.
