Cheap stud finder trick actually saved my butt on a ceiling patch
Last week I had to patch a ceiling in an old house in Cleveland where the joists were buried under like 3 coats of paint and texture. My regular stud finder kept giving false readings and I was about to just poke holes guessing. I remembered an old timer telling me to use a strong neodymium magnet on a string to find the drywall screws. I grabbed a small one from my toolbox, tied it to a piece of twine, and dragged it across the ceiling until it stuck. Marked every screw line with a pencil and had my stud locations dead on in about 10 minutes. Worked way better than that $60 gadget I've been lugging around for years. Has anyone else switched back to the magnet method for tough surfaces, or do you just use a longer bit and hope for the best?
