Found out the hard way that my mud was too thick for mesh tape
Spent 3 hours on a ceiling patch that should have taken 45 minutes because the mud wouldn't push through the tape right. Anybody else had trouble with mesh tape pulling away when your mud mix is off?

Right, "mud was too thick for mesh tape" is the key part there. You basically learned the hard way that mesh tape needs a looser mix, almost like pancake batter. A thick mud just sits on top of the mesh and won't bond or push through. Live and learn, but that's three hours you're not getting back.

Heard that certain mesh tapes work better with hot mud since it glues itself to the paper backing.

Actually @charlieh74 that pancake batter tip is gold because most guys mix their hot mud way too thick for mesh. The tape itself has those little glue dots that need a wetter mix to activate against the paper backing.
