Glad I trusted my gut on that questionable repair

I almost fixed a tablet without checking if it was stolen. Tracking down the real owner through the serial number felt like a real win.

Honestly, that's the kind of thing more people should do. What made you decide to check the serial number in the first place? I've heard too many stories about repaired gadgets getting sold off without anyone asking questions. It's the right thing to do (even if it takes more time), and it keeps you out of legal trouble later. Did the owner seem surprised or grateful when you contacted them? Stuff like this makes me feel a bit better about how people handle these situations.

Checking serials just became a habit after a friend bought a "refurbished" phone that was actually reported stolen. The original owner was shocked I called, said they'd written it off after a burglary years ago. Their relief made the whole process worth it, even with the extra steps.

That "legal trouble" part got me thinking. What sort of problems have you actually seen people run into over this?

Totally agree, @grant413! I once found an old laptop at a thrift store with the serial still on it. Called the company, and they actually tracked down the original owner who was super relieved to get it back. It was a bit of a hassle, but worth it to avoid any shady business. Have you ever had to do something like that?
