Checking serials just became a habit after a friend bought a "refurbished" phone that was actually reported stolen. The original owner was shocked I called, said they'd written it off after a burglary years ago. Their relief made the whole process worth it, even with the extra steps.

Totally agree, @grant413! I once found an old laptop at a thrift store with the serial still on it.
