Rant: Shop owner said to always swap the fuse first, but that cost me a $300 repair on a TV
I mean, I was working on a Samsung TV that wouldn't power on. This guy who runs a shop downtown said to always check the fuse first because it's the cheapest fix. So I swapped it and it blew again, turns out the main board had a short. I ended up replacing the board anyway and lost a $300 job because I wasted time on the fuse. So which is it: start with the cheap stuff or go straight to the usual suspect? What's your go-to first step when a set won't turn on?

Skip the fuse and check the power supply caps first. A blown fuse is usually a symptom, not the problem, so you learn more by following the short. Save the fuse for last once you know nothing else is dead.
