Wrote off hot air rework for 6 years, then a $12 stencil changed my mind
I always said hot air was for lazy techs and I stuck with my iron for everything, even QFN chips. Last month a guy brought in a dead MacBook board from his shop in Reno and I told him reflowing it was a waste of time. He pulled out a cheap stencil and a tube of paste, and had the thing booting in about 20 minutes. I sat there with my mouth shut. Since then I have done 14 boards with hot air and paste, and only one came back. My iron still gets used for connectors and through hole stuff, but I was wrong about the rest. Anyone here still refusing to touch hot air, or did you all cave like I did?
