I thought those new elevator phone line testers were just extra junk to buy.

My boss in Kansas City made me use one on a service call last week, and it found a bad connection in the riser cable in under two minutes. What other simple tools have you guys been surprised by?

Grab a non-contact voltage tester for quick sanity checks. I thought they were a gimmick until mine saved me from cutting into a live wall. Now it's the first thing out of my bag.

Those testers can give a false sense of security. They beep for all sorts of stuff, like old wiring in the wall or even a nearby cable. Relying on one alone is how people still get shocked. The only sure way is to actually test at the outlet with a proper meter.
