Spent $480 on a laser shaft alignment kit, best money this year
Had a motor on the 12th floor out of alignment, kept burning through couplers every 3 weeks. finally broke down and bought a laser kit instead of borrowing the old guy's straight edge. Anyone else ditch the feeler gauges for laser alignment, or is manual still the standard on your crews?

Read an article last month that said laser alignment cuts setup time by like 60 percent compared to dial indicators. My shop still uses the old straight edge method for most stuff, mostly because the boss refuses to spend money on anything shiny. We had a pump that ate bearings every couple months and the old guy kept saying it was fine. Finally rented a laser kit for a weekend and found we were off by twelve thousandths. Made the purchase order for our own kit the next week. Nothing wrong with feeler gauges for rough work, but once you see the numbers on a screen it's hard to go back.
