Why does nobody talk about the elevator that ate my whole Tuesday and made me question everything?
Last week at the Riverside Hotel downtown, I got called in for a 12 stop traction job that was supposedly just a door operator swap. I show up at 7 AM, and the car won't even level at the 6th floor, so I spend an hour chasing a ghost fault that turns out to be a bad pickup roller on the selector. Then the real fun starts: the brake won't set right, and I'm riding the top of the car with a flashlight in my teeth trying to see if the coil is weak or if the springs are shot. I finally get it running by 4 PM, but I skipped lunch and my back is screaming from hunching over the controller for so long. The building manager tips me 20 bucks and says "you guys are miracle workers," but I still can't decide if it was a win or a loss. Part of me thinks any day you get a car back in service without ordering parts is a good day, but the other part says we should have caught that roller on the last PM. How do you all judge a day like that? Is it about the fix or about the fact that it shouldn't have happened at all?
My car has had a check engine light on for 8 months now and it still gets me to work every day. It's the same thing with anything that runs, the small stuff slips and somehow the whole thing keeps going anyway.
