The contract template that cost me a $2,000 retainer in Portland
Pulled a boilerplate payment terms section from a free template I found here and used it for a client last month. They held the final invoice for 38 days because the template didn't specify late fees, and I had no leverage. Anyone else just copy-paste these without checking the fine print?

People skip reading contracts the same way they skip reading terms of service or software updates, which is how small mistakes turn into big headaches later. The template gave you a false sense of safety because it looked official, but official looking doesn't mean it covers your specific situation. Once you get burned like this though, you start checking every single line, and that habit saves way more than the two grand you lost.
