Spent 7 weeks chasing $2,400 from a guy in Tampa who kept saying the check was in the mail
I finished a logo and packaging job for a small hot sauce brand back in May, and the owner promised payment within 10 days. By week 3 he was texting me about "cash flow issues" and by week 5 he ghosted me completely, even though I could see him posting new product photos on his own Instagram. I finally got the money after I mailed a paper invoice to his house with a note saying I was filing in small claims court in Hillsborough County. What got me paid was the paper trail, not the angry emails. Does anyone else have a magic word or move that actually gets ghost clients to pay up?
Did you ever think all that loud stuff would work and then find out it just makes them dig in? I used to fire off emails every day and leave voicemails, figured if I made enough noise he'd cave just to get rid of me. Nope. The guy in Tampa sounds like every other deadbeat, they ignore you faster the more you push. What actually flipped it for me was boring stuff, a printed invoice in an envelope with a date on it and the words small claims. Soon as it looked like real mail from a real court, not just another angry message he could swipe away, the money showed up in two days. Turns out the paper trail scares them way more than your typing does.
