Took the late fee gamble and picked wrong on a $4,800 job

Had a client in Austin go quiet after I sent the final files, so I had to choose between waiting another two weeks or hitting them with the 10% late fee right away. I went with the fee because my rent was due and I figured it would light a fire, but they just ignored it for 30 days and then paid the original amount with a nasty note about my 'attitude'. The fee did nothing except make me look pushy, and now I'm wondering if the gentle reminder route would've kept them friendly for the next project. Anyone else tried the early penalty and lived to regret it, or is there a magic wording that actually works?
