Heads up on those cheap rasp handles from the farm supply store

I had a guy come in last month with a nasty gash on his palm from a handle that split mid-rasp on a draft horse. Turns out the screw-on ferrule on those $15 ones loosens up after 3 or 4 uses, and the tang can pop right out. Anyone else run into this or found a budget brand that actually holds up?

Oh man yeah I totally agree with you there. I grabbed one of those same cheap handles from the local co-op last spring and it loosened up on me after just a few uses too. Not even on a draft horse either, just on a standard quarter horse and the ferrule started spinning around. I think people who haven't had it happen yet just got lucky or aren't using it for as many horses in a row. The metal on those things is so thin it just can't handle any real torque before it gives out.

Split mid-rasp on a draft horse" sounds like a dramatic story, but honestly, how hard are you cranking on that thing? I've used those cheap handles from Tractor Supply for years on smaller stock and never had a ferrule loosen up. Maybe if you're putting all your weight into a big horse with a heavy coat, but for basic hoof work, they're fine. People love to blame the tool when it might just be operator error or overkill use. Could be a one-off defect too, not a whole brand problem.
