Hot take: hoof nippers need sharpening way more often than most of us admit
Had a talk with a 30 year vet at a clinic in Amarillo last month and he said most of us are basically crushing hoof instead of cutting it after 3 or 4 weeks on the same edge, and honestly my trims got cleaner the second I stopped babying my good pair, so is anyone else sharpening every 2 weeks or am I just late to this?
Oh wow, this hits home for me. I had no idea I was supposed to be sharpening that often, and now I'm sitting here wondering how many hooves I've been crushing for years without even knowing it. The part about babying the good pair really gets me because that is exactly what I do, I save them for the nice horses and let the old pair do the dirty work way past when they should. Hearing that a 30 year vet said this makes me feel a lot better about being late to the party on it. Guess I'm digging out the sharpener this weekend.
