A friend told me my color choices were too safe and it clicked

I was working on a jacket design for a local art show, sticking with my usual blacks and grays. My friend, who's a painter, looked at my sketches and said, 'You're building a house with only one kind of brick.' That simple comment made me stop. I went back and swapped the main fabric for a deep plum and added a burnt orange lining. The whole piece came alive. Has anyone else had a small piece of advice completely shift a project's direction?

That grit you added is what makes a design feel lived in, not just looked at.

My work used to feel like a hospital room.

Yeah, I started leaving in my pencil sketch lines and it totally changed the feel.

Honestly, it's not even about color for me. It's about texture. I was making these flat graphic posters for ages. Someone said they looked clean but felt cold. Like they were printed on plastic. Started printing on different papers, even adding a rough hand-drawn border. The physical feel of the thing changed the whole vibe. That little bit of grit made the digital work feel real.
