Am I the only one who skips the croquis and draws on old newspaper? It fixed my flat sketches in a weekend.
I used to spend 2 hours on every croquis in my sketchbook, and my designs still looked stiff and wrong on a real body. Then my neighbor, who sews quilts in her garage here in Boise, handed me a stack of old newspaper and said, "just draw the clothes on real people." So I started tracing over photos of my friends at a coffee shop, using the newspaper like cheap tissue paper, and something clicked. The paper is see through, so I can layer 3 or 4 poses on top of each other and see how a sleeve falls when an arm bends. In 4 days I filled 11 pages and finally understood why my wrap dresses always pulled at the waist. I am not saying buy anything special, I am saying grab the free ads that show up in your mailbox on Wednesday. Has anyone else tried drawing over photos instead of a standard figure, and did it change how you cut your patterns?
