Question about my fabric cutting method
I was making a dress for my friend's wedding in Portland and spent two whole days cutting silk with my fabric scissors, but then my grandma visited and asked why I wasn't using a rotary cutter on a mat. Have you ever had a basic tool tip change your whole process?

My grandma would say the same thing. Tbh, I tried a rotary cutter once and it felt so wrong on delicate fabric. You get way more control with good shears, especially for tricky silk that can shift. The sound of a clean scissor cut is just better than rolling a blade. For me, the old way is the right way for a special project.

Okay but "the sound of a clean scissor cut is just better" feels like a lot, @kelly470. It's just cutting fabric, not a symphony. I've used my rotary cutter on silk charmeuse and it was fine, no shifting. You just need a fresh blade and a good mat. Sometimes the old way is just the way you learned first, not some sacred rule.

Totally get what you're saying, @kelly470. I had a roll of silk chiffon slide out from under my rotary cutter and it was a total mess, like trying to cut a cloud. Went right back to my heavy shears and it was like night and day, you can feel the fabric and stop if it starts to bunch. That sound of the scissors going through in one smooth snip is so much more satisfying than a weird plastic-y rolling noise. Some tools just have a better feel for the fancy stuff.
