Hit a rock vein with the auger on a job in Austin yesterday and bent the whole digger arm

After 4 hours of sweating in 100 degree heat trying to get posts in rocky ground I finally gave up and rented a jackhammer from Home Depot for $48 and it saved my whole schedule, has anyone else run into limestone layers they just could not punch through?

A whole day just for one hole? That's brutal man.

Have you tried using a hydraulic breaker attachment on a mini excavator instead of a jackhammer? That Austin limestone is no joke, I've seen guys spend a whole day just trying to get one hole deep enough for a 4x4 post. A jackhammer on its own still takes forever if the rock layer is thick. Did you hit solid limestone or just a vein mixed with clay and caliche?

a full day just for one hole" - was that with a rented breaker or a cheap one from Harbor Freight?
