Setting posts with a gas auger beat hand digging in this limestone, did 18 holes in 3 hours yesterday
Spent 2 days last spring fighting a spud bar through rock for a 60 foot run and yesterday knocked out the same footage in one morning, so if you're still hand digging in hard ground, what's actually stopping you from renting one?
What kind of rock are you actually in though? I ask because a gas auger in true limestone is just gonna spin and smoke, and you'll burn through bits fast. Around here we hit a lot of shale and clay mix, and yeah a power auger eats that up, but pure rock ledges still need a bar or a rock bit on a breaker. So it might not be stubbornness stopping people, it's that the tool flat out won't cut what's under their feet.
