The difference between post hole digging in dry clay versus wet clay was night and day for me

I did a job last June in Austin where the ground was bone dry and it took me nearly an hour per hole with a manual digger... then last week we got rain and the next job in the same soil type took half the time. Has anyone else noticed a huge difference in digging speed based on soil moisture levels, or am I just dealing with weird ground conditions?

Oh man, I had a buddy who tried digging post holes in that dry Texas clay one summer and he straight up gave up and rented a powered auger the next day. Then he tried again after a good rain and said it was like cutting through butter (well, thick butter) compared to the concrete it felt like before.

Did you ever try wetting the ground first and letting it soak overnight before digging?
