Question about my first video editing job in Austin last month where I charged $200 flat.

Everyone says to start low, but that flat rate for a 5 minute wedding video meant I worked for about $8 an hour after all the changes, so I think telling new people to just take any price is bad advice, has anyone else found a better way to set a first project minimum?

Charge a day rate, not by the final video length.

Right, because the client who wants a 30-second ad definitely wants to pay for a full 8-hour day. That makes total sense.

Honestly, a day rate can scare off a first client. A project minimum based on your bare bones living cost makes more sense for starting out, so you at least cover your bills.
