That friend who said 'just lower your rates to get started' cost me 3 months of garbage work

My buddy Mike told me to price at $15 an hour on Upwork just to build a profile. I listened, landed 8 jobs in 2 weeks, and spent the next 3 months doing grinding edits for people who treated me like a robot. One client in Ohio asked for 6 rewrites on a 500-word blog post for $12. I finally raised my rate to $40 and suddenly the same kind of projects took half the time and actually paid. Who else got burned by bad advice from someone who never freelanced a day in their life?

That $12 client with 6 rewrites is the exact same energy as people who say "just work harder" when you're already drowning. It's like when someone tells you to "just smile more" at your retail job, then wonders why you're exhausted at the end of the day. I've noticed this pattern everywhere - people who've never done the actual work love giving advice about how easy it should be. The worst part is they genuinely believe they're helping, but their advice just sets you up to get used.

$12 for 6 rewrites? Ngl that's insane, I'd tell them to kick rocks after the second one.

YES. Mike owes you an apology for that soul-crushing advice.
