Just watched a DIYer try to lay vinyl plank over a 1/4 inch dip in the subfloor. They said it would 'settle'. It's been 3 days and the locking system is already popping.

That's a classic case of wishful thinking over basic prep. Vinyl plank needs a flat surface, not a perfect one, but a quarter inch dip is way too much. The planks will flex with every step, putting constant stress on the locks until they fail. It won't settle, it'll just get worse as more locks break. You have to fix the floor first, or you're just wasting time and money. What's the rush to skip the most important step?

A quarter inch dip sounds pretty normal though.

Maybe it just needs a little more time.
