Spent a whole morning on a single plank of engineered wood

It was a weird plank with a slight twist, and I kept trying to force it with the mallet. Finally realized I needed to shave a tiny bit off the bottom of the groove with a utility knife. Anyone have a better trick for a stubborn locking joint?
