Keeping hydrangeas perky with a cool dunk

My hydrangeas were drooping badly yesterday. I gave them a cold water soak, and they perked right up by morning. Do you use any special methods for hardy blooms?

Last summer I tried ice water in the vase.

My sunflowers held up for eight days with ice water. I tried cold tap water on another bunch and they wilted faster. The ice keeps the stems firm and the blooms open.

Honestly the ice thing makes sense. Cold tap water still warms up to room temp pretty fast. Ice keeps it cold longer, which probably slows down the bacteria that gunks up the stems. Tried it with some grocery store tulips once and they lasted almost two weeks.

So does ice water work even better than just cold tap water?
